Collaborative Music Sculpture

Concept: Design and fabricate a collaborative paper mache sculpture inspired by a piece of music using an abstracted form and intensive surface detail.  view slideshow
Content: paper mache sculpture (non-functional) covered in fiber (cloth/yarn), mixed media, found objects, wire, string, beads, branches…
  • List songs that relate to each category on handout, choose your favorite two songs and translate each into a visual representation of the piece.
  • Consult with your partner and choose the most successful design amongst all four ideas.
  • CIRCLE FINAL SCULPTURE DESIGN on handout, list the song title and artist, print resources (lyrics, pictures, etc), complete surface treatment sketch, & turn-in for credit today.
  • PLAN SURFACE TREATMENT Surface ideas: stamps, writing, cloth, yarn, paper, magazine cut-outs, post-its with notes, facebook printouts,leaves,mud, grass, sticks, candy wrappers, etc.'
  • Make a maquette, or small 3D model of your form, using wire, newspaper, paper towels, and tape.
  • Make the basic 2 foot+ form of your sculpture, or SKELETON, using wire, newspaper, paper towels, and tape. Add surface treatment all over form and present to class!
      • Use folded, twisted, or bunched newspaper, minimal tape, and wire if necessary

  • Clean up form by smoothing goo covered paper over form. Add paper pulp, other paper materials, yarn cloth, and more to cover entire surface with colors that represent your song.
  • Apply one last layer of text & imagery using LINE to further concept & refine aesthetic (style).
